The pool is usually why you picked the villa. It's in the first photo, it's what the kids ask about, it's what you picture on the drive down.
“A pool is a pool.”
Not in Brittany. The climate is cooler than in the south of France, so a pool here is only as good as its heating and its season. Ask these seven questions before you book.

1. Is the pool really private?
"Pool" on a listing can mean a shared pool in a holiday park. A private pool is used only by your group. No timetable, no neighbours.
2. Is it heated, and in which months?
This is the question that matters most here. An unheated pool can stay cold well into summer. Ask for the exact opening months, not just "summer".
3. How big is it?
A small plunge pool is fine for cooling off. If you want to swim lengths, look for 10 metres or more.
4. What safety system does it have?
French law requires private in-ground pools, including holiday rentals, to have an approved safety device: a fence, a cover, a shelter or an alarm.
With young children, ask which one. And plan to watch them near the water at all times.
5. Bedrooms and bathrooms, not just "sleeps 8"
"Sleeps 8" can mean sofa beds in the living room. Check the number of real bedrooms and bathrooms, and the bed in each room.
6. What does the final price include?
Check whether cleaning, linen, towels and tourist tax are included. Big booking platforms usually build their fees into what you pay. Booking direct with the owner often costs less for the same dates.
7. What is the cancellation policy?
Read it before you pay, not after. Many villas take full payment up front and only refund cancellations made well in advance. Travel insurance covers the rest.

Frequently asked questions
Are pools in Brittany heated?
Many are, but not all. Because the climate is cooler, ask whether the pool is heated and for the exact months it is open.
Do private pools in France need a safety device?
Yes. French law requires private in-ground pools, including holiday rentals, to have an approved fence, cover, shelter or alarm.
Is it cheaper to book a villa direct?
Often, yes. Booking platforms usually build their fees into the price, so booking direct with the owner can cost less for the same stay.
